"Sick Water? The Central Role of Wastewater Management in Sustainable Development"

"More people die as a result of polluted water than are killed by all forms of violence, including wars." This statistic, presented in the introduction to Sick Water? includes the 1.8 million children under five who die annually from water-related disease. Investments in appropriate remedies for this urgent problem can pay dividends that are not only life-saving, but have the potential for creating new economic opportunities. According to Achim Steiner, Executive Director, UNEP, and Anna Tibaijuka, Executive Director, UN-HABITAT, "Meeting the wastewater challenge is ... a prudent, practical and transformative act, able to boost public health, secure the sustainability of natural resources and trigger employment in better, more intelligent water management.
